And yet it may be now, more than ever, that we should consider the imminence of bringing theory back into focus — and view. You are in the right place! Theory in Focus is a series of visual stories, which reinvent how we approach media theory. A Saturated Media World, An Urgent Need to Decode

Content surrounds us: our phones, our feeds, the streaming platforms, and even the ways we talk, vote, protest and desire. What was once known as the media has now been turned into the air we breathe.

We consume:

· Unlimited multiplatform content

· Immediate judgement of friends, influencers and bots alike

· Algorithms that lead us to particular stories, aesthetics, and values that prompt easily without our awareness

Within this type of environment, being a passive consumer or even a savvy user is no longer sufficient. We require instruments of thought. This is the point where theory comes in play not as academic fluff but as a mode of intellectual survival.

What This Series Will Do?

The goal of the Theory in Focus course is to, through visual means, “unpack” and explain the importance of theory, and how it works as a lens through which meaning might be made. In the series of illustrated posts, each follows a basic but effective premise:

· Theory hones our perception- It exercises our mindfulness. It teaches us that it is important to see what is usually invisible: ideology, framing, bias, assumptions.

· Theory doubts what we assume as obvious- It poses the following question: Who determines what is normal? Which stories are prioritised, and which stories are silenced?

· Theory uncovers concealed ways of power- It aids us to recognize the way meaning is created- by whom. It makes us turn to the subject of race, class, gender, nation, and capitalism and its influence on culture life.

Theory has always been associated with either being challenging, obscure or abstract. This series counters that impression. By imposing an easily digestible and emotionally touching illustration to abstract concepts, Theory in Focus argues that theory is not just relevant: it is essential.

The posts in this series do not merely explain these concepts, but also visualise them. Using metaphors such as magnifying glasses, iceberg diagrams and decoder lens, the series encourages the readers to experience what theory feels like.
